Types of Dental Plans in California: What to Know Before You Enroll

Dental insurance might not be flashy, but it’s one of the most practical benefits you can have especially when it comes to preventive care and avoiding costly surprises down the road. If you're considering dental plans in California, here’s a breakdown of the basics: types of plans, what they cover, and how to make the right choice for you or your business.

What Do Dental Plans Cover?

Most dental insurance plans group coverage into three categories:

Preventive Care

This includes your routine cleanings, exams, and X-rays. These services are usually covered at 100% and often don’t count toward your annual max. Keeping up with preventive care can help you avoid major issues down the line.

 Basic Services

Fillings, simple extractions, and some gum treatments fall into this category. These are generally covered at 60–80%, and you may need to meet a deductible before coverage kicks in.

 Major Services

Think root canals, crowns, dentures, and bridges. These procedures may have longer waiting periods and are covered at 20-50%. Make sure to check your plan for any exclusions or limitations.

Day-One Coverage vs. Waiting Periods

Some dental plans offer Day 1 coverage, meaning you can access basic or major services immediately. This is especially appealing if you need care soon. However, it's important to note that while services may be available right away, the coverage percentage may be reduced for the first 6–12 months. For example, a filling might be covered at only 40–50% in year one, increasing in later years if you stay enrolled.

Other plans include waiting periods, usually between 3 and 12 months for basic or major procedures. These plans may offer higher coverage percentages after the wait but you'll need to plan ahead if you're anticipating treatment.

What’s an Annual Maximum?

The annual max is the most your dental plan will pay in a year. Once you reach your max, you’re responsible for 100% of remaining costs until the new plan year starts.

Fun fact: Most preventive services don’t count toward the annual max, making them a smart way to get regular care without dipping into your yearly allowance.

Which Plan Is Right for You?

If you're looking for coverage that starts right away, look for plans with no waiting period. If you're planning ahead for bigger procedures, a plan with higher coverage on major services may be a better fit.
